SPACE OF REPOSE

Spring 2009

Intro Studio

This project involved designing a space for a simple student to study/contemplate/rest.  Our design needed to respond to exterior views and investigate interior/exterior relationships through an exploration of abstract form making in relation to a defined site.

For this space I wanted the occupant to freely transition through the thinking, working, and sleeping areas.  The different heights of each space are to determine the space one is occupying.

MIDDLE SCHOOL PROJECT

SPRING 2010

Collaborative Architecture Project

This was a project-centered course emphasizing a team approach to solving complex architectural problems.  Students conduct architectural projects in the local community for a specific client and site.  This involved site planning, programming, schematic design, and construction management.

I worked with two other students for this project.  We were faced with the middle school building which was no longer going to be used as the middle school, it was up for sale.  We needed to come up with alternatives for the space for our client, the Realtor. We decided that apartment style living would work best for the main building that previously housed classrooms.  The addition of a Food Co-op would bring customers in to the community.  And the addition of housing (family townhouses and work/live townhouses) would fill some of the need for affordable housing in the city.

PRECEDENT STUDY

FALL 2009

Studio I

Eames House

For this project we were able to choose an existing house to analyze and understand. After the research a live/work addition was our design goal.

I wanted to make the addition for the Eames House stand out as much as the simple design of the existing house and studio does.

BOAT HOUSE

SPRING 2011

Studio II

This was a studio investigation of fundamental design concepts, principles, and processes. The project focused on the creation of both abstract and programmed architectural forms and spaces with an emphasis on formal/aesthetic values and the development of a visual vocabulary.

I wanted to incorporate the beautiful view of the lake as the user approaches and proceeds up and around the boat house, or passes by the boat house to the dock.

MELC CENTER

FALL 2011

Studio III
School of Sustainable Built Environment Project

A group project to create a vision for the future of the College with the addition of a new building to house Construction, Environmental Studies, and Landscape programs.

I worked with two team members to create the Math Environmental Landscape and Construction (MELC) Center For a Sustainable Built Environment, incorporating the TDS and Science Center areas into a more uniform and inviting courtyard.

DORMITORY PROJECT

SPRING 2012

Senior Design Capstone

The concept for this dormitory was derived from my initial parti diagram that came to mind after hearing about the location and adjacency of the student’s pods, parent’s apartments, and teacher apartments.  The middle parent is able to freely flow through both pods.   The other two parents have access into only one student pod.  Both teacher apartments have their own separate entrances away from the student entrances for privacy.   Parents are able to enter into the shared kitchen and living space.  The student’s individual and double rooms open to the shared kitchen and living space to create a family oriented pod.  The function of the storage areas in the student pods, teacher apartments, and teacher apartments is for laundry and mechanical systems.

The thought behind the green roof was to incorporate a living and learning environment where the students live on the campus.  It could be used for growing edible plants as well as a place to take in nature.  The benefits of green roofs are also very beneficial to the overall building.  The roof reduces the cooling needs in summer, provides insulation, reduces storm water runoff, and increases the roofs overall lifespan.  The space on the green roof can be enjoyed and shared by students and faculty.
